Stop-the-Bleed (American College of Surgeons)
Purpose of the course:
Civilians and law enforcement officers need basic training in Bleeding Control principles, so they are able to provide immediate, frontline aid until the Emergency Medical Services are able to take over care of an injured person.
Target group:
Outdoorsmen, extreme sports, security staff and armed response, Cash in transit security staff, School teachers, Law enforcement and police. Really anyone who would like to be able to help themselves or others and prevent loss of life as a result of bleeding.
No previous training is required.
Course objective:
Civilians and law enforcement officers need basic training in Bleeding Control principles so they can provide immediate, frontline aid until Emergency Medical Services can take over care of an injured person. We know one of the most common causes of death is uncontrolled external bleeding. Due to various factors, there may be a delay between the time of injury and the time Emergency Medical Services arrives on the scene. Without basic intervention in these circumstances, preventable deaths will undoubtedly occur
The American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma is leading the effort to save lives by teaching civilians and law enforcement personnel to provide a vital initial response to stop uncontrolled bleeding in emergencies. This will be accomplished by developing a comprehensive, sustainable bleeding control education and information program that will inform, educate, and empower everyone attending this course.
Course Outline:
⭄ Background to bleeding and blood loss
⭄ Exposure to blood
⭄ Recognise life-threatening bleeding
⭄ Primary principles for Immediate response to bleeding
⭄ Appropriate ways to stop bleeding in different parts of the body
⭄ The types and use of haemostatics
⭄ Practical component
