Purpose of the course:
AHA’s ACLS Course has been updated to reflect new science in the 2020 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (2020 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC). This course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasising the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR.
This advanced course highlights the importance of high-performance team dynamics and communication, systems of care, recognition and intervention of cardiopulmonary arrest, immediate post-cardiac arrest, acute dysrhythmia, stroke, and acute coronary syndromes (ACS).
Target group:
The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Course is available to any healthcare professional who is registered as a Medical or Dental Practitioner, Intern, Junior Intern, Professional Nurse, Clinical Technologist or Advanced Life Support Paramedic. Participants must be in possession of a valid AHA BLS for Healthcare Provider Certificate.
Course outline:
The ACLS course is a hands-on learning experience which focuses on the management of cardiac arrest and various peri-arrest conditions.
On registration, the candidate will receive the ACLS Provider Manual. We recommend allowing 1-2 months of study time to prepare for the course.
A multiple-choice exam will be written on the first day, with a pass mark of 84%.
This course covers:
⭄ Advanced airway management, including invasive and non-invasive devices and techniques.
⭄ The primary ACLS emergency conditions, including VT, VF, PEA
⭄ Asystole
⭄ The tachycardias and bradycardia
⭄ Acute ischemic heart disease
⭄ Electrical therapy, including defibrillation, cardioversion and pacing, invasive therapeutic and monitoring techniques.
⭄ Special resuscitation situations – including stroke management and ethical considerations.
Assessment:
⭄ Current registration as a Medical or Dental Practitioner, Intern, Junior intern, Professional Nurse or Paramedic.
⭄ Valid Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider Certificate or Valid Paediatric Advanced Life Support Certificate (The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers course is a prerequisite for the AHA Advanced Life Support courses.)

⭄ Duration of course: 2 days
⭄ Evaluation: Theory & Practical (if the candidate achieves less than 84% in the written exam, a re-write must be arranged BY THE CANDIDATE within 30 days of the training. No re-write can be done on the day of the training).
⭄ CPD Accreditation: 20 Continuing Professional Development points, if a valid HPCSA number is provided.
