Purpose of the course:

Participants will be able to perform the steps of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, basic airway manoeuvres and rescue breathing in casualties of all ages. After the course, the candidates will be skilled in the use of bag-valve resuscitators and automated external defibrillation techniques.

Participants will be able to demonstrate how to manage choking in conscious and unconscious adults, children and infants and be aware of special considerations such as scene and rescuer safety and standard safety precautions. Attention will also be given to the legal aspects of resuscitation and the ethical aspects of basic life support.

Target group:

The Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers Course is open to all healthcare workers who have a voluntary or professional duty to respond to a cardiac or respiratory emergency.

Course structure:

The Course is taught in a relaxed, video-based practice-while-watching interactive adult-learning environment. The focus is on active participation with ample opportunity to practice and apply these skills in simulated scenarios.

Preparation and assessment:

    On registration, the candidate will receive a BLS for HCP manual to study. The candidate will be expected to achieve 84% on a written entry test (taken on the day of the course) and to demonstrate proficiency in the practical exercises. A pocket mask is provided for practice purposes.

    Upon successful completion of the training course, an American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers course completion card, valid for 2 years, will be issued.

    6 CPD points can be claimed if a valid HPCSA number is provided.

    The BLS for Healthcare Provider Course is a compulsory entry requirement for international advanced life support courses, such as ACLS, PALS, and ANLS, as well as specific national post-graduate qualifications, such as the Diploma in Primary Emergency Care (Dip PEC) of the College of Emergency Medicine of South Africa.

      ⭄ Entry requirement: Qualified Health Care Professional / Candidate will receive manual at least two weeks before the course for self-study and achieve 85% for written entry test at the start of the course.
